Whether you’re a bride over 40 or a mother of the bride or groom, the aim is the same: fresh, radiant skin and soft definition that looks lovely up close and holds up through a long day. Mature skin is usually drier and thinner, with finer lines, so the techniques change a little, but the result can be even more elegant.

Prep is half the look

  • Use a richer moisturiser in the weeks before, and a hydrating primer on the day.
  • Apply eye cream sparingly. Too much makes concealer slide into lines.
  • Prep the lips with balm, then blot it off before applying colour.

Base: creamy, thin and luminous

  • Choose a hydrating, natural-radiant foundation rather than a heavy matte one.
  • Pick a shade with a little warmth (peach or soft pink). Skin often looks paler and more neutral with age, and a touch of warmth brings it back to life.
  • Keep concealer creamy and only a shade lighter than foundation, and tap it in with a fingertip.
  • Powder only where you get shiny. Extra powder settles into lines.

Colour and placement that lifts

  • Blush: cream blush placed high on the cheekbones and swept towards the temples. Avoid placing it low.
  • Eyes: mattes and soft satins in shades a little lighter than your eye colour. Frost and glitter emphasise texture.
  • Liner: soft, smudged brown, slate or taupe along the upper lash line. Avoid lining all the way round.
  • Brows: soft taupe or grey powder in feathery strokes. Never black.
  • Lips: an anti-feathering liner, then a creamy (not dry matte) rose, coral, berry or soft red.

Frequently asked questions

What makeup is best for a mother of the bride?

Hydrating foundation, cream blush, soft matte eyeshadow, waterproof mascara and a creamy, lined lipstick. It should look polished and natural, and complement rather than match the bride.

Should mature brides wear false lashes?

Lightweight, natural strip lashes or a few clusters at the outer corners lift the eye beautifully. Avoid heavy, dramatic styles.

How do I stop lipstick bleeding into fine lines?

Use a clear or matching anti-feathering liner around the lips, fill the lips with liner, and choose creamy long-wear formulas over glossy ones.
